One thousand years ago, 90% of the world’s Jews could speak or read Arabic. From the time that Islam developed an intellectual fervour in the eighth century, Jewish scholarship benefited too, with the first individually authored Jewish works since ancient times — grammar, philosophy, theology, poetry, Bible and rabbinic commentary, law codes, and mystical thought. All of these in various ways followed Islamic models.
Rabbi Dr Michael Hilton, author of “The Christian Effect on Jewish Life ” (German title: Wie es sich christelt, so jüdelt es sich), has just finished writing a companion volume about the impact of Islam on Judaism over the centuries. He includes the areas of scripture, law, art, mysticism and musar as well as a little of his personal journey of discovery.
After a short survey, the lecture will illustrate the topic with examples from the story of Joseph in Judaism and Islam. The following Q&A will give space to ask about other areas.
The lecture will be in English with the opportunity to have German summaries if needed.
